Good Nutrition Wins the Grand Prize

Head coach Deb Moore and her Sunrise Mountain volleyball team won a $15,000 grand prize scholarship from Energy Athletics Strength (EAS) for implementing performance nutrition into the team's program and fostering community spirit.

After meeting with Coach Moore on performance, nutrition team members used the FIFO (Fat In/Fat Out) method to monitor their eating habits and nutritional intake. A traffic light model reminded the girls about foods that were limited, foods that could be consumed in moderation and foods that could be eaten in larger quantities. The girls' eyes were opened to making good choices when they realized eating 1-2 candy bars a day (a red light food) took up a large portion of their daily 2000 calorie allotment.

Moore promotes performance nutrition with her students and tells her team to think of their body like a high performance rocket. "You need (high quality) rocket fuel to soar."

In addition to focusing on personal nutrition, the team sponsored community events such as fitness seminars with guest speakers and hosted the Carol Chase Memorial Volleyball Tournament to raise money for breast cancer research.

Moore and the team hope to use some of the scholarship money to expand awareness and participation in their fitness program "Commit to Get Fit!" to the students and teachers of Sunrise Mountain High School.

Moore attributes the team's fifth place finish in the state last year to each and every young woman's commitment to setting and meeting daily nutritional goals.

Ohio-based EAS is the leading developer and marketer of science-based sports nutrition products that help meet specific needs of athletes at all levels.
