Alyssa Jordan, a Sunrise Mountain High School junior, has been selected by the Oprah show as a winner of an essay contest. The contest sponsored by the Oprah show, required Alyssa to

Alyssa Jordan

describe why the novel Night by Elie Wiesel is relevant to today's high schoolers and society. Alyssa's 1000-word essay discussed the similarities of social apathy during the holocaust and present day. She packed her bags for Chicago and attended the Oprah show on April 25.

The Oprah show was originally scheduled for taping in February, so Alyssa assumed she hadn't won when she didn't hear from them. When Pat Burckhard, Alyssa’s school principal, staged a lecture during her physics class, she had no idea it was a set-up so he could surprise her with the call from the Oprah staff. Alyssa was thrilled, as were her parents who were waiting in the lecture hall.

Amanda Finton, Alyssa's English teacher who encouraged her to participate in the Oprah contest, was always sure of Alyssa's skills. She said, "Alyssa was the only finalist from Arizona selected for this honor. She is a talented writer, a dedicated athlete and a gifted artist. I am sure this is just one step in the many wonderful things she will accomplish in her life."
